Bob Bentley and his big, black dog Bear meet me at the front door and lead me through the kitchen on our way to his studio, which is full of evidence of a working painter. All the paintings Bob is working on are lined up against furniture and each other, ready and, like children, waiting for him to choose them, hoping they are his favorite.

Some artists wait for the muse to grab them or drag them along for the ride; some count on the vagaries of creativity or the mood of the day, and some look to the phases of the moon. Not Stephanie Trenchard. “It’s my job,” she told me. “This is what I do for a living. Every day I go to work. Sometimes we go in separate cars and at different times. But I have a job just like anyone else.”
